Polish Ambassador: US could set example for Europe, by supplying weapons to Ukraine

If the United States decides to supply defensive weapons to Ukraine, it will be a positive signal for similar actions in the EU, announced the Polish Ambassador to the US, Ryszard Shnepf.

“An example set by the United States will surely become the one, which will be followed by other EU countries,” – announced the Ambassador at the conference “The importance of Ukrainian security for Europe” held in Washington on Wednesday.

He said that weapon supply to Ukraine is “very difficult and responsible” step, since the US administration and the EU see a political solution to this conflict. Now, says the Polish diplomat, the issue is about how to preserve the sovereignty of Ukraine. He also noted the need for reform and renewal in all spheres of Ukrainian economy.

Moreover, Shnepf noted, that Canada, which actively supports Ukraine, also plays a key role in the issue of military assistance.

Ambassador also said that Poland, as earlier, strongly supports Ukraine.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkyavichyus in Washington also called on to approve weapon supplies to Ukraine.

On February 24, the US Secretary of State John Kerry announced that the administration of the US President Barack Obama continues to discuss the supply of defensive weapons to Ukraine. “This issue is discussed in the administration,” – he said, adding that Obama has yet to take a final decision on the matter.
