Obama extends sanctions against Russia

On March 3, President Barack Obama issued a decree which extended the sanctions against the Russian Federation adopted in 2014.

The document was posted on the official website of the White House.

“I have sent a notice to the Federal Register that the decree №13660, announced on 6 March, 2014, would remain in force until March 6, 2015,” – says the statement to the US Congress.

“The actions and policies of persons, undermining democratic processes and institutions in Ukraine, threaten peace, security, stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine as well as actions and policies of the Russian government, including the annexation of the Crimea and the use of force in Ukraine, continue to create extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States, ” – says Obama in the statement.

Thus, the US president “has decided that it is necessary to continue the national emergency regime introduced by the decree №13660.”

Russia’s actions create an urgent need for extension of four decrees, which introduced sanctions against Russia last year. Thus, Obama points out, that this way, the effect of the first decree, introducing sanctions, was extended for another year.

The other three decrees might be extended closer to their expiration date, according to the statement.
