Ukraine officially asks UN peacekeepers to be deployed on its territory

Ukraine has sent a formal request to the United Nations asking to the organization to temporary deploy its peacekeeping forces in the eastern regions of the country, where there is a ceasefire between Ukrainian troops and Russian terrorist forces.

This has been announced by MFA of Ukraine press secretary, Yevhen Perebiynis on March 13, reports the Associated Press.

He added that there would be consultations with the UN on the size and scope of a possible mission.

The press secretary announced that the application about the UN peacekeepers had been already sent to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, and that the final application would be sent after its approval by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

The approval by all five permanent members of the UN Security Council will be also required to launch the process.

Russia, however, will likely to block the decision.

According to the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennadiy Gatilov, Russia will not support the deployment of peacekeeping forces on the territory of Ukraine if the proposal is introduced to the UN Security Council, since it is not stipulated by the Minsk agreements.

More than 6,000 people have been killed during the war in the Donbas since April, 2014.
